A new case of online fraud involving agricultural machinery has been reported in the Austrian province of Tyrol. This type of scam is becoming increasingly common in the online sale of vehicles and expensive equipment, according to Agrarheute.
Deposit Paid for a Non-Existent Tractor
According to police reports, an unknown individual advertised a tractor worth several tens of thousands of euros on an online marketplace between May 11 and May 18. A 56-year-old Austrian farmer became interested in the offer and communicated with the supposed seller by phone and through social media.
During the negotiations, the seller requested an advance payment equal to half of the purchase price. Believing the offer to be legitimate, the farmer transferred the requested amount to a bank account in Germany on May 14.
Shock Upon Arrival in Germany
A few days later, the farmer traveled to Germany to inspect the tractor and complete the purchase. However, he soon discovered that the company listed in the advertisement had never offered such a tractor for sale. The investigation revealed that the company’s details had been fraudulently used to make the advertisement appear genuine.
In addition to suffering a significant financial loss, the victim was left disappointed by the increasingly sophisticated methods scammers use to target buyers of agricultural machinery.
Police Urge Caution
Authorities are advising buyers to exercise extreme caution when purchasing machinery and vehicles online. Before making any advance payment, it is essential to verify the seller’s identity, confirm the legitimacy of the advertisement, and, whenever possible, inspect the equipment in person before finalizing the transaction.
